What is Aave (AAVE)?

Aave is one of the largest decentralized lending protocols in crypto. Originally launched as ETHLend in 2017 and rebranded to Aave in 2020, it allows users to deposit crypto as collateral and borrow other crypto against it — all controlled by smart contracts with no centralized custodian. AAVE is the governance token of the protocol, used to vote on parameter changes, new asset listings, and treasury usage. AAVE holders also benefit from a 'Safety Module' staking mechanism where staked AAVE backstops the protocol against bad debt in exchange for AAVE rewards.

How Aave Works

Aave runs on Ethereum, Polygon, Avalanche, Optimism, Arbitrum, and several other EVM chains. Lenders deposit assets (ETH, USDC, USDT, WBTC, and dozens of others) into liquidity pools and earn variable interest from borrowers. Borrowers post collateral (must be overcollateralized — typically 125-150% of borrowed value) and pay interest, with positions automatically liquidated by bots if collateral value drops below the safety threshold. Aave V3 (the current version) introduced cross-chain borrowing and isolation modes that let riskier assets be listed without endangering the whole protocol. Protocol revenue flows to the DAO treasury, which AAVE holders govern.

Who Holds AAVE

AAVE is held mostly by sophisticated crypto users — DeFi natives, traders running leveraged positions through the protocol, and governance participants. Trading liquidity is good on major exchanges (Coinbase, Binance, Kraken, OKX) and excellent on decentralized exchanges. Institutional involvement has grown as DeFi has matured, but AAVE remains primarily a retail/crypto-native token.

When AAVE Moves

AAVE moves on broad DeFi sentiment, total value locked (TVL) in the protocol, Ethereum price (since most lending happens on Ethereum), interest rate dynamics in crypto, and any major hack or exploit news in DeFi (Aave itself has a strong security record but contagion from other protocols matters). Watch for: Aave V4 development, new chain deployments, regulatory news around DeFi lending in the US and EU, and DAO governance votes on the treasury and tokenomics.

Crypto risk: AAVE is a DeFi governance token tied to smart-contract risk. Position size accordingly.
