What is Hedera (HBAR)?

Hedera is a distributed ledger network — not a blockchain in the traditional sense — that uses a consensus algorithm called Hashgraph instead of chains of blocks. HBAR is the native token used to pay for transactions, smart contract execution, and network services. Hedera launched in 2018 with a governance model run by major corporations (Google, IBM, Boeing, Deutsche Telekom, LG, and others as Council Members) rather than open community governance. This positioning targets enterprise adoption: companies that want blockchain-like benefits (immutable audit trails, decentralized consensus) but with predictable governance and performance.

How Hedera Works

Hedera's Hashgraph algorithm uses 'gossip about gossip' and virtual voting to reach consensus without proof-of-work mining or traditional proof-of-stake block production. The network processes thousands of transactions per second with sub-3-second finality and transaction fees fixed at around $0.0001. Governance is held by the Hedera Governing Council — a maximum of 39 member organizations that each operate consensus nodes. HBAR holders can stake their tokens to council nodes to earn rewards, but they don't directly vote on protocol changes. Total HBAR supply is capped at 50 billion, with a multi-year release schedule.

Who Holds HBAR

HBAR has a notable retail following due to its enterprise positioning and the prestige of its Council Members. Trading liquidity is decent on major exchanges (Binance, Coinbase, Kraken, OKX, HTX) but thinner than top-10 coins. Institutional adoption is heavier than for most altcoins because the Council Member structure includes Fortune 500 companies, but actual institutional treasury allocations to HBAR remain limited.

When HBAR Moves

HBAR moves on enterprise adoption announcements (new Council Members, real-world deployments by existing members), broad crypto sentiment, and 'tokenization of real-world assets' news cycles where Hedera positions itself as enterprise-ready. Watch for: new Hashgraph network upgrades, partnership announcements with banks/payment networks, and any moves in the tokenization-of-securities space where Hedera is one of several competing platforms.

Crypto risk: HBAR is more centralized than most major cryptocurrencies. Position size accordingly.
