Bitcoin Cash is a hard-fork split of Bitcoin that happened in August 2017, created when a faction of the Bitcoin community wanted larger blocks (more transactions per block) to enable everyday payments use. The original Bitcoin chain kept the BTC ticker and prioritized scaling via the Lightning Network; the fork became BCH and pursued on-chain scaling. BCH has the same 21 million supply cap and halving schedule as Bitcoin but with 32 MB blocks (vs Bitcoin's 1 MB / 4 MB weight limit). Despite a strong initial launch and brief market-cap competition with Bitcoin in 2017-2018, BCH has settled into a smaller niche as a payments-focused chain.
BCH uses the same SHA-256 mining algorithm as Bitcoin, which means BCH miners can switch between BTC and BCH chains based on profitability. Block time is the same 10 minutes. The larger block size enables more transactions per block, lower fees, and easier on-chain micropayments — but at the cost of higher node operating requirements and the historical contention that splits the chain socially from Bitcoin. BCH itself has further forked over the years (BSV split off in 2018, BCHA / eCash split off in 2020), each time with smaller communities.
BCH has a smaller but committed holder base, largely overlapping with Bitcoin-payments advocates. Trading liquidity is solid on major exchanges (Coinbase, Kraken, Binance) due to its top-20 market cap status. Institutional interest is limited compared to BTC — Grayscale's BCH Trust provides some traditional-finance access. BCH tends to trade as a beta play on Bitcoin with significantly higher volatility.
BCH moves on Bitcoin price action (it often amplifies BTC moves in both directions), halving cycles (BCH halves on the same schedule as BTC), payment adoption news, and any narrative cycle around 'Bitcoin scaling' or 'micropayments.' Watch for: merchant acceptance announcements, exchange listings/delistings, and any technical upgrade votes by the BCH developer community.
