What is Stellar (XLM)?

Stellar is a payments-focused blockchain launched in 2014 by Jed McCaleb (also a co-founder of Ripple) and Joyce Kim. The Stellar network is designed for fast, cheap cross-border transfers and asset tokenization, particularly for unbanked populations and remittance corridors. XLM (Lumens) is the native token, used to pay transaction fees and serve as a bridge currency for asset swaps. The Stellar Development Foundation is a non-profit that maintains the protocol and partners with banks, fintechs, and humanitarian organizations to expand adoption.

How Stellar Works

Stellar uses the Stellar Consensus Protocol (SCP), a federated Byzantine agreement system where each node chooses a set of trusted validators rather than relying on universal proof-of-work or proof-of-stake. Confirmation time is 3-5 seconds, and fees are a fraction of a cent. The network natively supports issuing custom tokens — banks and stablecoin issuers like Circle (USDC), Franklin Templeton, and others issue tokenized assets on Stellar. The total XLM supply is 50 billion, with a portion held by the Stellar Development Foundation for ongoing ecosystem grants and development.

Who Holds XLM

XLM has one of the largest retail holder bases in crypto due to its long history, low unit price, and frequent airdrops in earlier years. Trading liquidity is strong on Coinbase, Kraken, Binance, OKX, and most other major exchanges. Institutional interest is growing alongside the real-world-asset tokenization narrative, with Franklin Templeton launching a tokenized money market fund on Stellar and other traditional finance experiments underway.

When XLM Moves

XLM moves on broad crypto sentiment, Ripple/XRP news (the two communities and use cases overlap somewhat), real-world-asset tokenization headlines, and Stellar Development Foundation announcements about new partnerships. Watch for: Soroban smart contract platform development (Stellar's smart contract layer launched in 2024), new tokenized asset issuances, and regulatory clarity around stablecoins and tokenized securities in major jurisdictions.

Crypto risk: XLM carries supply concentration with the Stellar Development Foundation. Position size accordingly.
